Sexual health and healthy sexuality are important to our overall general physical and mental health. Although, sexual health and sexuality can be hard to define, they are part of all life stages.

Our sexuality is influenced by and made up of many things including:

  • physical traits or sex assigned at birth;
  • the gender we identify with and how we express it;
  • whom we are attracted to physically, emotionally and romantically;
  • the process of puberty;
  • reproduction;
  • life stages and experiences; and
  • personal, family, and cultural beliefs.

Being comfortable with your sexuality and being able to positively control your own experiences and reproduction, are part of being sexually healthy. Being sexually healthy also means having access to accurate health information and being free of: injury, violence, disease and infections.
