Sarnia, ON – Despite an endless stream of accessible nutrition information, results of an on-line survey conducted by County of Lambton Lambton Public Health suggest Lambton residents are confused about the salt in their diet.
Connie Mallette, Registered Dietitian with Lambton Public Health, says, among the 380 respondents to the 2012 Nutrition Month survey, responses to salt-related questions produced the most incorrect results.
"It seems salt is a puzzling subject when it comes to our diet," said Mallette. "Salt is salt, whether it comes from the land or the sea. Any ingredients with the words salt or sodium react the same way in our bodies. It doesn't matter if it's table salt, sea salt, garlic salt, onion salt, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or monosodium glutamate (MSG); it's still a salt."
One question - "The best way to limit salt intake in your diet is to stop using the salt shaker?" - stumped more than half of respondents. Mallette says "In reality, processed foods account for about 75% of salt in our diets, considerably more salt than from the salt shaker."
Learning to read food labels is an important first step to limit salt in your diet. Using the Daily Value on the Nutrition Facts table, choose products with a Daily Value of less than 15% sodium when possible.
Because not all information is credible, and myths and misinformation are everywhere, the goal of the Nutrition Month campaign was to help community members make informed, healthy food choices with readily available food and nutrition information provided by Registered Dietitians.
