Smurfs: Search for a Smoke-Free Environment

This page was reviewed or revised on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 11:05 AM

Sarnia, ON – Help Lambton Public Health and Youth CHAT (Community Health Action Team) with their search for a smoke-free world as they host Tobacco-Free Outdoor Movie Night on Friday, July 20.

The FREE event, featuring the animated movie 'Smurfs: The Lost Village', will be held at Clearwater Park from 7 p.m.-11 p.m. behind the YMCA and Clearwater Arena. Activities before the movie begin at 7 p.m.; the movie starts at dusk.

According to the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU) about 37% of youth start smoking because of what they see in movies.

"That's a huge concern because in Ontario 86% of movies with smoking were rated for kids and teens," says Martina Jackson, Health Promoter for Lambton Public Health. "If we changed the rating system for movies with smoking to 18A, the amount of youth who start smoking would drop."

What you need to know:

  • Smurfs is an all-ages movie; parents are encouraged to attend
  • Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult
  • Bring lawn chairs and blankets
  • Youth CHAT and its partner, the City of Sarnia, will provide free popcorn, interactive games, contests, and prizes.

"We want youth to see that tobacco-free movies are fun to watch, and parents to understand the significance of smoking in movies," added Jackson.

Parents can support the removal of smoking from movies by signing a petition, talking with Youth CHAT members about the issue, and asking questions.
