Local School Gains Gold Status

Sarnia, ON - When it comes to creating a healthy school environment, students, staff and parents at Ecole Les Rapides elementary school deserve a gold star.

On Thursday, June 28 at 11:30 a.m. Ecole Les Rapides will celebrate its OPHEA (Ontario Physical and Health Education Association) Healthy Schools Certification by unveiling its Gold Status banner.

"We are incredibly proud of the work done this year at Ecole Les Rapides," said Martina Jackson, Health Promoter with Lambton Public Health and a member of the school's Heathy Schools Certification committee. "Inserting health into schools benefits every person in the school and soon becomes part of their regular practice."

"Working toward a healthy school environment supports student success academically, physically and mentally."

OPHEA's healthy schools certification is based on the 6-Step Healthy Schools Process. The annual certification process guides a school through the steps needed to plan and implement a range of activities and strategies that promote well-being in the school community.

The certification process includes activities and strategies that focus on a selected priority health topic that are important to the school and identified by looking at existing assets and current needs. A point-based system used during the school year allows schools to plan the process steps online and apply to be certified as a bronze, silver, or gold school in April.

If your school would like more information on healthy schools or OPHEA's Healthy Schools Certification program, please email healthyschools@county-lambton.on.ca or call Lambton Public Health at 519-344-2057 or toll-free 1-800-387-2882.
