Tomorrow's Greener Schools Today

This page was reviewed or revised on Monday, May 7, 2018 2:11 PM

Sarnia, ON - Six (6) schools in Lambton County are helping to plant a greener tomorrow.

Lambton Public Health and the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority are partnering with local school boards to plant trees in their schoolyards through the Tomorrow's Greener Schools Today program. This initiative has been made possible thanks to funding from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and with support from the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund.

"Trees provide schools with a more natural environment and shade coverage for their outdoor areas," says Martina Jackson, Health Promoter at Lambton Public Health (LPH). "This program is one component of creating a healthy school environment in Lambton Schools."

At each of the six tree plantings, representatives from Lambton Public Health and the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority will educate students on the benefits of trees.

Tree plantings will take place at:

  • Colonel Cameron Public School, Corunna; Tuesday, May 8 at 12:00 p.m.
  • Gregory A. Hogan Catholic School, Sarnia; Tuesday, May 22 at TBD.
  • Bridgeview Public School, Point Edward; Wednesday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m.
  • Ecole Les Rapides, Sarnia; Thursday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m.
  • Brigden Public School, Brigden; Friday, May 25 at 10:05 a.m.
  • Rosedale Public School, Sarnia; Tuesday, May 29 at 12:30 p.m.

Tree cover in Lambton County is about half the recommended level for a healthy environment. Shade trees provide a wide-range of benefits: from improved air quality and natural schoolyard cooling, to protection from cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation.
