Fruits and Veggies 'Fresh to Your Desk'

Sarnia, ON - The Lambton Student Nutrition Program will be launching a new pilot project with the goal of putting 88,000 fruits and vegetables into the hands of students in Lambton County by December 8.

The Fresh to Your Desk program is part of a centralized food procurement system being explored by the Ontario Nutrition Program Southwest Region.

"Fruits and Veggies Fresh to Your Desk will increase the amount of vegetables and fruits students receive, while lowering food costs and saving volunteer time," said Leslie Palimaka, Student Nutrition Coordinator, Lambton Public Health. "The pilot program provides nine schools across Lambton with the delivery of enough fruits and vegetables to serve the entire school for eight weeks."

The innovative approach will ensure the delivery of fresh produce to more than 2,200 students while reducing shopping time for program volunteers.

Financial support is provided through the Ontario Student Nutrition Program, Healthy Kids Community Challenge-Lambton Partners and Noelle's Gift Charitable Foundation.

Lambton's Student Nutrition Program provides FREE healthy food to students every school day. The program, financially supported by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services, is delivered by Lambton Public Health and the Ontario Student Nutrition Program.
