Lifejacket Challenge - Be Water Wise

This page was reviewed or revised on Thursday, June 1, 2017 12:06 PM

Sarnia, ON - This summer take the Lambton Water Wise Lifejacket Challenge to keep your family safe in and around the water.

On June 5, Lambton Water Wise, in partnership with Canadian Tire Sarnia, will launch its 'Why I Will' campaign during Red Cross Water Safety Week (June 5-12). The goal is to encourage people to share positive reasons to wear a lifejacket, and reduce the risk of drowning.

"Lots of people, young and old, invent excuses why they don't need to wear their lifejacket," said Lisa Clark, Health Promoter with Lambton Public Health. "We want to challenge boaters, fishermen, paddlers and swimmers to weigh the positive reasons of 'Why I Will' wear a lifejacket instead of the potential consequences of not wearing one."

Not wearing a lifejacket is among the leading causes of drowning-related deaths in Canada, according to the 2016 Ontario Drowning Report and local hospital data.

Lambton OPP Sgt. Timothy Ives emphasized, "Wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) or lifejacket is the best life insurance you'll ever buy. Find a lifejacket that fits properly, and is comfortable. If you don't wear it, it won't work."

From June 5-12, visit the Water Wise display at the Canadian Tire Sarnia sports department to check out a variety of sporty, easy-to-wear lifejackets, including inflatable styles. Representatives will be available every day to answer water safety questions and help find the right lifejacket for your activity.

Throughout June, stop by Canadian Tire and tell us your reason 'Why I Will' wear a lifejacket this summer and enter to win one of three $50 gift cards donated by Canadian Tire, Blackwater Cycle/Wawanosh Watercraft and The Outdoorsman. Winners will be announced June 29.
