Summer Youth Walking Challenge #walk1000

Location:

A walking contest for youth 13-18 years of age with great prizes!

Enter the contest daily from now until August 19.

3 simple steps to enter:

  • Walk at least 1,000 steps.
  • Take a photo of the location where you completed your walk
  • Post the photo on our FaceBook or Twitter page and include #walk1000

Use your smartphone, or a pedometer to track your steps. You can also borrow a pedometer for free from any Lambton County Library.

Prizes every 2 weeks:

Contest Details

  • Winners must live in Lambton County
  • All entries will be tracked using the hashtag #walk1000 and a random draw will determine the winner. Lambton Public Health will contact the winner via direct message

Why 1,000 steps to participate?

One thousand steps is a nice, round number and to be honest, a very achievable goal. For most of us, we already do way more than 1,000 steps every day without thinking about it. Start with 1,000 a day and build from there. You have a chance to win free stuff by simply tracking the steps you already take!

What does 1,000 steps look like?

Don't think of it as 1,000 steps. When you do the math, and yes we know it is summer, it is less than one kilometre, two laps around the track at high school or three lengths of a soccer field.

How much daily physical activity time should youth do?

Teens need at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Some do more, some do less, but walking at least 1,000 steps is a great start for all of us. Physical activity helps you get stronger as you grow. It gets the blood pumping, builds muscles and endurance to do the things you really like to do. Physical activity also keeps your brain sharp.

How does it help?

You don`t have to be an athlete to benefit from physical activity. Walking, biking, or roller blades or any type of physical activity are great ways to get moving and stay moving. Being active will make you will feel better and stimulate the brain. Challenge yourself. Start with 1,000 steps, and next week, shoot for 2,000. Invite a friend and build an active friendship.
